Survival of Shigella dysenteriae on fomites
Studies have shown that various objects, such as utensils, toys, and clothes, can serve as vehicles for transmission of Shigella spp. Shigellae can become viable but non-culturable (VBNC) when exposed to various environmental conditions as shown in earlier studies. The present study was carried out to detect VBNC Shigella dysenteriae type 1 on various fomites by direct viable counting, polymera...
متن کاملThe spread of Shigella dysenteriae type I in Africa.
INTRODUCTION Since Shiga's bacilli were discovered 100 years ago, Shigella dysenteriae type I (SD 1) has been implicated in large-scale epidemics world-wide with many thousands of deaths. Its infectivity and virulence, protean manifestations and propensity to develop multi-drug resistance, has meant that as a cause of disease it has not been conquered despite all advances. Epidemic Shigella has...
متن کاملImmunochemical and cytotoxic activities of Shigella dysenteriae 1 (shiga) and shiga-like toxins.
Toxins in culture supernatants and bacterial lysates of S. dysenteriae 1 and S. flexneri were quantitated by a cytotoxicity assay and a newly developed radioimmunoassay. Cytotoxin titers paralleled toxin antigen levels. Thus, variations in cytotoxicity among shigellae probably reflect differences in toxin yield rather than specific activity (cytotoxicity per microgram of toxin antigen).
متن کاملDetection of E. coli O157:H7 and Shigella dysenteriae toxins in clinical samples by PCR-ELISA.
Shiga toxin producing bacteria are potential causes of serious human disease such as hemorrhagic colitis, severe inflammations of ileocolonic regions of gastrointestinal tract, thrombocytopenia, septicemia, malignant disorders in urinary ducts, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Shiga toxin 1 (stx1), shiga toxin 2 (stx2), or a combination of both are responsible for most clinical symptoms of thes...
متن کاملThe Specificity of the Agglutinin Reaction for Shigella dysenteriae: II. Agglutinin Absorption Relationships between Shigella dysenteriae and Escherichia coli.
In a previous communication (Mackie, 1938) we have reported observations upon the Shigella dysenteriae agglutinin curves in a group of patients presenting the intestinal pathology of chronic bacillary dysentery and bacteriologic or serologic evdence of infection by these organisms. Fluctuation of the titre curves in individual patients, the common finding of higher titres in the culture-negativ...
